2019 Northwest Michigan Regional Juried Exhibition
February 3 - May 5, 2019
The Dennos Museum Center invited artists in Northwest Michigan to submit up to two works to be juried for exhibition in the 2019 Northwest Michigan Regional Juried Exhibition. Held regularly at the Museum for 27 years, the exhibition features art made by local artists over the last year, juried by a regional arts professional. This year’s esteemed juror is James A. Bridenstine, former Director of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The exhibition as installed features 95 artworks by 92 artists from 13 counties throughout Northwest Michigan.
Juror's Statement:
This exhibition showcases what I consider to be the best examples of paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and ceramics from 362 pieces submitted by artists from Northern Michigan. The works of art exhibited in these galleries celebrate the artistic talents which thrive in the northern portion of our “mitten” state. In jurying this show I tried to give the viewer some idea of the richness, variety and diversity of art created in this area, including examples of the figurative to the abstract, from the bold to the playful. I am hopeful that the viewer is both engaged and energized by the talent displayed in this exhibition.
James A. Bridenstine retired as Executive Director of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA) in 2014 following a successful campaign to expand and endow the Institute. Prior to beginning his directorship at the KIA in 1990, Jim was Director of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House from 1986 – 1990, and Associate Curator and Director of Statewide Services for 10 years at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
He holds a BA in History from The College of the Holy Cross, an MA in Art History from George Washington University and is a graduate of Harvard University’s Business School of Museum Management program. In addition to an active involvement with arts and museum professional organizations on the state and national level, he has written and lectured extensively on art and art history, while making significant acquisitions for the art collection of the KIA.
