Andy Warhol: Recent Gifts from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
January 1–AUGUST 24, 2014
This exhibition from the collections of the Dennos Museum Center features 7 original screen prints by the noted American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987). The prints date from 1970-1986.
The gift was made by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. This is the second gift to the collections of the Dennos by the Foundation who gifted over 150 original Polaroid photographs and gelatin silver prints by Warhol in 2008.
Andy Warhol was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as Pop Art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Warhol's art encompassed many forms of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music.
After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. His studio, The Factory, was a famous gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons.
This collection of prints is representative of the artistic style and imagery typical to Warhol’s work as an artist. They are designated by the Warhol Foundation as “Extra out of the edition prints for research and educational purposes only.”
