We Don't Want Them

The Dennos Museum Center in collaboration with the Traverse Area District Library and Interlochen Center for the Arts have been selected to serve as a community host for the Great Michigan Read traveling exhibit, We Don’t Want Them , during the month of March.
Focusing on race and housing in metropolitan Detroit, We Don’t Want Them examines the realities African Americans faced from 1900 to the present. A prominent feature of the exhibit is the Ossian Sweet trials which is documented in this year’s Great Michigan Read selection, “Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age” by Kevin Boyle.

In addition to hosting the exhibit, each organization will offer supporting programs designed to stimulate discussion concerning the themes of discrimination as well as tolerance and acceptance which are represented in both the exhibit and book selection

Peter Sparling, former principal dancer with the Martha Graham company and Thurnau Professor of Dance at the University of Michigan, presents a lecture on the 1935 Graham ballet, Panorama, in the Bonisteel Library.

A one-hour presentation on jazz, poetry, and the history of Detroit in the 1920s in Corson Auditorium.

Film: Banished, Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 2 p.m. (free)
Film Screening of "Banished: American Ethnic Cleansing": A hundred years ago, in communities across the U.S., white residents forced thousands of black families to flee their homes. Even a century later, these towns remain almost entirely white. Banished tells the story of three of these communities and their black descendants, who return to learn their shocking histories.
