April 14 - June 17, 2012
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College would like to invite you to help us create an exhibition from the museum’s art collections and in doing so make some museum history! The exhibition title is Museum Collections: Community Curators.
For over 20 years, the college and the museum have worked to develop an art collection that can be used as a community resource for exhibition and teaching. This collection contains about 2000 works, half of which is Inuit art, and the balance a diverse collection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, works on paper and other media by artists of state, national and international reputation. For years we have shown this growing collection by selecting the works to be shown and presenting them in the galleries. This time we would like you to select the works to be shown and write a short paragraph (your interpretation) about the work from your perspective.
During the 2006 Community Curators exhibition, we invited about 50 people, representing a diverse cross section of the Grand Traverse community, to participate. This time around, we are inviting the entire community to participate, not only for the gallery exhibition, but also as a new, online exhibition.
From March 22, 2012 through the end of the exhibition, June 17, 2012, viewers can go online to our website, view the works, and offer their own interpretations of the works.
All of the works selected by community curators by April 3 will be shown in the gallery from April 14 to June 17, 2012. There will be an opening reception for our members and curators on Friday, April 13, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
Instructions for participation:
- Browse through the online image gallery
- Find an image that is meaningful to you
- Write a short paragraph with your interpretation of the work (why it is interesting or meaningful to you, why you chose it)

Of course, there are some ground rules. Here is the fine print:
- To select a work to be included in the exhibition, community curators must write and submit an interpretation. Each curator may select up to three works to interpret.
- In the case that all works selected do not fit in the gallery, some may have to be excluded.
- For your work and interpretation to be used in the physical gallery, it must be posted online by April 3, 2012.
- In the case that a work has multiple interpretations by several community curators, we will use as many interpretations as we have allotted space in the physical gallery. All interpretations will remain in the online gallery.
- Interpretations entered after April 3, 2012 will remain online as part of the digital gallery.
- The Dennos Museum Center retains the right to remove or exclude any interpretations that could be considered offensive or contain profanity.
- Interpretations will be edited for spelling and grammar.
- Interpretations will not be considered for the printed labels without the following information: your first and last name, email address, hometown, and the name of the work you are writing about.
If you do not have access to the internet, you are welcome to use the kiosk at our front desk to participate. Community curators with works in the physical gallery will receive email confirmation by April 11, 2012.
